Bing brothers, Nuremberg, ca. 1910
Metal with steam engine
height with trolley 17.2 cm, length without flag 60 cm
Inv. 1972.178.
The warship is one of those mechanical toys, like trains and cars, that presuppose technical understanding. Fathers are always eager to pass on such expertise. Such objects can be regarded as toys for both adults and children. The ship is a vedette with a low deck and various superstructures: free standing bridge, hatches, two anchors, two mortars and two torpedo tubes. There is clearly no room for crew's quarters in this little propeller driven steamer. The mast flies a flag of the German Empire with an iron cross, and similar flags adorn the bow and stern. Propulsion is by a steam engine below deck. A trolley supports the model, made by the famous Bing brothers' metal toy factory in Nuremberg.
