Biography

Gesa Bernges underwent three years of practical training as a conservator of paintings and sculpture before enrolling at Cologne Institute of Conservation Studies (CICS) in 2003. Two years later she switched to the department of Textiles and Archaeological Fibres headed by Prof. Annemarie Stauffer, from which she graduated in 2010.

Gesa Bernges joined Basel Historical Museum as a conservator specialized in textiles in 2011. Besides taking care of the collection and works in storage, she also does preventive conservation work, looks after items on loan and helps prepare objects for exhibitions (including the new permanent exhibition in 2011, Scheikh Ibrahims Traum in 2012, Fred Spillmann in 2015, Mode und Musik der 1920er Jahre in 2016, Übermensch – Friedrich Nietzsche und die Folgen in 2019).

Gesa Bernges is a member of two professional associations, the German Verband der Restauratoren (VDR) and the Swiss Verband für Konservierung und Restaurierung (SKR). For the VDR she organized two conferences: “Textil in Materialkombination” in 2016 and “Textilobjekte mit Geschichte – Umgang mit Änderungen, Reparaturen und Restaurierungen an historischen Textilien” in 2018.

Alongside her work for the Historical Museum, Gesa Bernges has for several years been actively involved in cataloguing over 300,000 gramophone-era shellac records for Phonopassion in Freiburg i. Br., one of Europe’s leading trading houses for vintage recordings.
