Exactly when Basel Historical Museum acquired this Star of David patch is not known. Since it was not catalogued for a long time, its provenance has remained a mystery. It may have belonged to a Jewish refugee who found asylum in Switzerland. Starting in 1941, all Jews in Nazi Germany and the German-occupied territories had to identify themselves by wearing a Star of David.
