Description

Guillaume Dupre (Sissonne ca. 1576-1640 Charenton) represented the diplomat Nicolas Brulart de Sillery in this medal of 1613 as chancellor of Navarre (from 1605) and France (from 1607). He also made a large bronze medallion of Brulart for the Louvre. The famous sculptor, medallist, die-cutter, gem cutter and mint master was a leading artist of the French school and one of the first artists to apply a sculptural relief style to medals. As the French ambassador in Solothurn (1587-95) Brulart intervened actively in the policies of the Confederates and the 'Drei Bünde'. He finally asked to be recalled because he could not satisfy the ever increasing demands being made by the many creditors of the French crown. In spite of this in 1601 and 1602 he led the French negotiations with the Swiss for a renewed alliance.
