inscription in Late Gothic minuscule: "S"alme"universitatis'Study' basiliensis'1516'
diameter 5.15 cm
Inv. 1973.218.
This matrix replaced an older one with the same motif dating from the time of the University's foundation. After being used for over 50 years the old signet was perhaps worn or it may have been lost. Our Lady in an aureole stands on a sickle moon and carries a sceptre in her left hand. The Christchild, holding out an open book, sits on her right arm. Five pointed stars are scattered between the radiating flames. An inscription band with scrolled ends at the top frames the image. Her sceptre, crown and the sea of stars identify Mary as the Queen of Heaven. The religious motif is indicative of the links between the University, opened in 1460, and the Church. Medieval universities were perceived essentially as places where the doctrine of salvation was taught. The Basle coat of arms at Mary's feet indicates that the city had authority over the University; it had created the University, and the University's rights stemmed from it. The seal with the Madonna continued to be used even after the Reformation and right up until the C20, and the motif of the Madonna in an aureole still appears on the University's official documents today.
