France, 1st half of 13th century
Dia. 82 cm
Inv. 1978.222.
The original parts of these two Gothic panes are fragments of a now lost stained-glass window from the Cathedral of Chartres. Their round shape is the result of additions dating from the modern period. One of the round panes is an Easter scene from the Gospel of John showing the Apostles Peter and John together with Mary Magdalen at the tomb of the risen Christ. The other is pieced together out of leaded molten glass, painted with black stain to show a Maiestas Domini: Christ in Majesty, flanked by two angels, enthroned as ruler of the world with a cross in one hand and an orb in the other, and enclosed inside a mandorla of light.
