Geneva, ca. 1690
Isaac Perrot (ca. 1644–1693) (movement) (bottom plate signed) “GD” (case)
Movement with verge escapement, chain on fusee winding mechanism; hour hand
Inv. 1983.1043.
The enamel painting on the back of the case shows a scene from Classical mythology: Venus and Amor in Vulcan’s forge. The inside of the case shows a Classical landscape with lake and ruined temple, the dial the hunting Diana. Alongside biblical themes, scenes from Classical mythology were popular motifs for enamelled watches. The outer case made of leather is decorated with gold piqué, a type of inlay in which tiny gold pins are arranged in a pattern.
