Vienna(?), 1st third 20th century
Leather, glass, synthetic mother of pearl
height 16.2 cm, width 22.5 cm
Inv. 1992.48.
This evening bag was purchased from a quality leather goods shop, B. Leuthold & Schuchmans, in Lucerne, where its elegant Basle owner was a frequent customer. Fashionable shops in Basle also offered high quality leather goods, but they showed a certain resistance to the flamboyance of the 'Liberty' style with its element of japonisme or to similar advanced fashions. This product, probably of a Viennese bag maker, is made of the finest chamois leather. The dragonflies are made of appliqued coloured leather heightened with gold paint. The moons in front of the black glass eyes of the dragonflies are an enchanting, eye catching feature.
