Probably Basel, 18th century
Goatskin, dyed green, silk ribbon
H 15.5 cm, dia. 21.5 cm
Inv. 1915.37.
A helmet like this one worn by a toddler learning to walk would normally be called a Fallhaube – which translates literally as “crash helmet” – or Bolli, to use the old dialect word. Its purpose was to protect delicate little heads and prevent injury in the event of a fall so that young children could run around without constant supervision even in homes full of sharp table corners and other hazards. This example made of very fine, very soft and supple dark-green goatskin is firmly padded and quilted to maximize protection. The ribbons at the side allow it to grow with the child. Other examples attach more importance to the decorative aspects and are adorned with silver tips, fringes and embroidery.
