Room 207

WRITING CABINET

This salon originally served as a guest bedroom for special visitors. It was also here that the wife of the house, Sara Burckhardt-Rohner (1761-1825), could receive official visitors after the birth of a child in childbed.
in 1969, this museum room was furnished with Louis XV furniture newly added to the collection. Utensils of the period around 1800 are spread out on the desk.
The merchant Johann Rudolf Burckhardt went about his work in his own house, as was customary at the time. However, his working office was not located here on the Bel Étage, but on the first floor. Gainful employment in one's own home was widespread until the early 20th century, for example in Basel for silk ribbon production. Today, it is experiencing a renewed upswing with the spread of the home office.
