Room 510

The Watch Collection of the Dr. Eugen Gschwind Foundation

The collection presented here was built up between 1950 and 1980 by the renowned collector Dr. Eugen Gschwind. It comprises around 200 clocks from the 15th to the early 18th century, making it one of the world's most important private collections of early wheel clocks. The clocks come from all over Europe, with an emphasis on movements from Germany, France and Switzerland. Gold enamel clocks from the 17th and early 18th centuries are a specialty, including clocks from the workshops of the Huaud family, Huguenot refugees who helped enamel and miniature painting achieve an international breakthrough in Geneva. Also well represented are clocks with stackfreed, a mechanism used on early clocks of the 16th and 17th centuries. In addition to the neck, pocket, and form clocks, the collection also includes some 50 large clocks - table, wall, and automaton clocks. In 1983, the Dr. Eugen Gschwind Foundation was established, and the collection has been on display in its entirety in the Haus zum Kirschgarten ever since.
