Cabinet desk by Johannes Tschudy

The Basel ebenist Johannes Tschudy-Meyer probably created this cabinet desk around 1730 for the court of the margraves of Baden-Durlach in Basel, as well as the identical piece of furniture on the opposite wall. Both pieces of furniture are largely identical in structure and marquetry up to the central motif of the mating parrots on the top door, although the marquetry here is somewhat less richly executed. The table is equipped as writing furniture with a pull-out shelf behind the central flap compartment. Apparently, the margrave had taken a liking to his ebenist's first design and commissioned further pieces.
