Object 5

Cabinet desk by Johannes Tschudy

The table supports a cabinet top with a door compartment framed by twelve drawers. The elaborate inlays of various exotic woods, enhanced by mushroom-stained green wood inlays in a walnut background show courtship parrots with berry branches, music trophy and weapon trophy. They are indications of education and beauty as well as courage and steadfastness. The extraordinarily high-quality furniture was made around 1730 by the ebenist Johannes Tschudy-Meyer, probably for the Basel residence of the margraves of Baden-Durlach. A parallel piece stands on the opposite wall.
