Room 307

Burckhardt's bedchamber

This room served as the bedroom of the lady of the house, Sara Burckhardt-Rohner (1761-1825). The centerpiece is a magnificent canopy bed, which comes from another upper middle-class house in Basel, but is entirely in keeping with the contemporary furnishing style. The precious oak paneling is part of the original furnishings of the room. The left wing door led to the neighboring "toilet" and "checkroom", the right one to a small adjoining room for the servants. The elaborate oak paneling indicates that the room also had an emphatically representative character, in contrast to the privacy of bedrooms common today.
