Room 306

Rose Boudoir

The small intimate rose boudoir (boudoir, from French bouder = to sulk) is one of the original preserved rooms of the Haus zum Kirschgarten and was a kind of "housewarming gift" from the master of the house to his newly married wife. The charming room served the lady of the house, Sara Burckhard-Rohner (1761-1825), as a retreat for reading or receiving guests. Equipped with a fireplace, the bright room possessed a special comfort with direct access to the terrace. For the painting of the cabinet, Johann Rudolf Burckhardt-Rohner (1750-1813) commissioned Mathias Klotz (1748-1821), a decorative and theater painter from Strasbourg. The rather inconspicuous signature "M. Klotz" with the date "1780" painted on the right-hand door to the terrace in the shadow of a lily of the valley suggests that the house was ready for occupation in that year.
