Bourgeois Living Spaces in the 18th Century – A journey of discovery at the Haus zum Kirschgarten
Cycle III, 1. bis 3. Klasse der Sekundarschule
Workshop
Around 1780, the Basel silk ribbon manufacturer Johann Rudolf Burckhardt commissioned the construction of the historic city mansion ‘Haus zum Kirschgarten’, which today serves as an exhibition space showcasing bourgeois domestic culture of the 18th and 19th centuries.
As part of the programme, pupils go on an exploratory tour through the rooms of the house. Working in groups, they use selected objects to examine the different realities of life at the end of the Ancien Régime – looking at the daily life of the Burckhardt family as well as that of their servants. During the concluding joint tour, the findings from the group work are brought together and discussed.
