World of dolls: Wax, porcelain, felt and fabric

Dolls in the 19th century usually consisted of several materials, a body made of leather, cloth or papier-mâché and a head made of materials such as wax, porcelain, papier-mâché or cloth. Especially in the face, the impression of delicate skin should be created. Wax was very suitable for this, but also very delicate. Porcelain was expensive and prone to breakage, but achieved the illusion of human skin, especially with heads made of bisque porcelain. The precious wax and porcelain head dolls were usually intended and dressed as elegant fashion dolls. In the early 20th century, soft dolls made of cloth and felt, which were more suitable for playing and cuddling and resembled real children in expression and proportions, came on the market.
