Toys from the Erzgebirge and Thuringia

In the Saxon Erzgebirge, several focal points in toy production emerged: Klimperkästen with simple mechanics in a wide variety of themes, fairground representations with many different stalls and the representation of Noah's Ark with numerous animal inhabitants, which continues to this day. The abundance of wood in the region led to the concentration on wood as a material, which was only supplemented by modeled editions made of papier-mâché and similar masses. The time-saving technique of woodturning was used for many details (figurines, baskets, items for sale at the markets), and the masterly technique of hoop-turning facilitated the production of the numerous animal figures.
Most of the toys made in the Erzgebirge were commissioned by publishers in Sonneberg, Thuringia. They conducted the actual trade with these objects
and kept almost all of the profits for themselves
toys were also made, but not from wood, but from papier-mâché.
