The Zizenhausen terracottas

The Zizenhausen figurines were made by the Sohn family from the end of the 18th century until the 20th century and over six generations. They were named after the place of manufacture, the small town of Zizenhausen near Stockach. The most famous manufacturer of the family was Anton Sohn I (1769-1841). The Basel art dealer Johann Rudolf Brenner (1778-1835) took over the distribution of the figures. The main sales area was Switzerland, but they were also delivered to France, Belgium, Great Britain and Germany. Drawings by the Basel artist Hieronymus Hess (1799-1850) often served as models for the figures.
The motifs were taken from themes such as the military, children's games, everyday scenes, depictions of traditional costumes and caricatures. The 42 groups of the Basel Dance of Death became particularly famous. Historical figures were also depicted.
