Two portraits of Franz Heinrich von Speyr-Clausenburger (1739-1823) and his wife Susanna Elisabeth von Speyr-Clausenburger (1754-1825)

Franz Heinrich von Speyr-Clausenburger (1739-1823) was a Basel notary and merchant. in 1772 he married Susanna Elisabeth von Speyr-Clausenburger (1754-1825) from Biel.
The Speyr family is a burgher family documented in Basel since the 13th and 14th centuries. The name probably indicates an origin from the city of Speyer and was widespread on both sides of the Upper Rhine. The family can be traced back in Basel to Simon von Spir, a silver merchant who joined the saffron guild in 1469. He was the descendant of one of the oldest civil families in Basel, which soon acquired a prestigious position in the 16th century thanks to marriage connections with the most important families in the city.
