Room 107

The Nathan-Rupp watch collection

in 1982, the Basel Historical Museum received an extensive bequest from the couple Carl and Lini Nathan-Rupp. It is a collection of 244 clocks that the banquier Carl Nathan had built up between 1951 and 1976. It includes 17 elementary clocks, 73 grandfather clocks, 22 carriage clocks and 132 neck, pocket and form clocks dating from the 16th to the 20th century and from workshops ranging from England to Japan. Together with the more than 200 wheel clocks from the Dr. Eugen Gschwind Foundation, the more than 250 pocket and form watches from the estate of Marie Bachofen-Vischer and a bundle of more than 100 elementary clocks from the estate of Emanuel Sarasin-Grossmann, it forms the core of the collection of timepieces in the Basel Historical Museum. The exhibits in this room come mainly from the Nathan-Rupp bequest and are supplemented by other clocks from the museum's collection.
