Portrait of Friedrich Hey (1699-1780)

The sitter wears a housecoat and a hood, in his right hand he holds a letter and in his left a tobacco pipe with a meerschaum head. It is made of the clay mineral sepiolite, which is originally white and turns brown when smoked. Meerschaum pipes originated in Turkey. There is a brass tobacco box on the table.
