Coffee - strong & stimulating

From about 1660 onwards, coffee beans were regularly imported in larger quantities via European seaports. Due to its strong stimulating effect, coffee triggered controversial discussions. In the 18th century, however, it became the most widely drunk of the three new hot drinks. Numerous coffee houses opened in the big cities. In Basel, the Ecklin family ran a café on Blumenrain for generations, with a sign advertising the new fashionable drink.
The ground coffee was poured directly into the pot so that it could develop its aroma well. This is why the pear-shaped pot with a high spout became popular. This prevents the coffee grounds from getting into the cup. Around 1800, the filter coffee pot was developed (see showcase on the right).
