Portrait medallion of Napoleon I (r. 1804-1814/15)
Description
The bust shows Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) as emperor in uniform. After Napoleon was offered the imperial dignity by a popular vote and the Senate, he crowned himself emperor on December 2, 1804, in Notre Dame de Paris Cathedral. Unlike the Roman emperors, he did not see himself as crowned by God, but as a representative of the people's sovereignty and the embodiment of the "volonté générale".
