Description

Marie-Thérèse de France (1778-1851) was the eldest child of the French king Louis XVI (r.1774-1792). She is considered the sole survivor of the royal family during the French Revolution. As such, she was initially held prisoner in the Tour du Temple in Paris. She was released on December 18, 1795. Her release took place at the Bellevue estate near Basel in exchange for French prisoners of war. After her release, Marie-Thérèse was taken to the Viennese court, her mother's birthplace.
