Miniature portrait of Tsar Alexander I (reigned 1801-1825)

Description

At the collapse of his empire, Napoleon I (r. 1804-1814/15) was pursued by the Allies to the borders of Basel, where officers passing through were given quarters. One of them was Tsar Alexander I (r. 1801-1825), who in 1814, together with a retinue of envoys, officials, couriers, servants and cooks, stayed for a short time at the Segerhof as guests of the Burckhardt family.
