Room 104

Garden pavilion

The garden pavilion was built in 1783 according to the designs of the Basel architect Samuel Werenfels. Originally it stood a few hundred meters away, in the garden of the property "zum Hof" in St. Alban-Vorstadt. There it bordered directly on the rear boundary wall of the large garden. As a private retreat, it was equipped with a low heating chamber and a privy at the back; therefore, there are no windows at the back
When the garden area was needed for a new building in the 1960s, the pavilion was dismantled. A few years later (1974) it was rebuilt on the present site, but without the rear extension.
