Room 103

Former library - Basel clocks

This room was designed as a library for the city palace built in 1775-1780. It faced the office of the master of the house and allowed a view into the garden. Today, the room still shows the original wall division from the time of construction, which impressively demonstrates the classicist style of the house. The stove, which matches the period, comes from a house in Spalenvorstadt.
The exhibition in this room is dedicated to the history of watchmaking in Basel. From the middle of the 17th century until well into the 18th century, watchmaking in Basel was of supra-regional importance. From the middle of the 18th century, with the growing and high-quality watch production in western Switzerland, it increasingly lost its importance.
