Dessert plate
Description
The landscape garden of the Hermitage in Arlesheim was one of the destinations recommended in travel guides in the Basel area since the late 18th century. Its architectural sights and scenic beauties were made known in several works of plates. A series of six views, drawn by Wilhelm Friedrich Gmelin (1760-), was translated into etchings and distributed by the Basel publishing house of Christian von Mechel (1737-1817) in 1786. The panel depicting the Apollo Grotto was used in the Berlin Porcelain Manufactory to decorate the round image field of this plate.
