Raum 501
Ceramic cellar
Description
Forged from iron
For many centuries iron was the most important material. It was used to make window grilles, gates, fences, railings, inn signs, spires, weather vanes and clockworks. Tools and household utensils, such as door knockers, door rings, chandeliers, locks, chests and fittings were also made of iron. In the 18th century, when numerous important upper middle-class houses were built in Basel, the art of Basel blacksmithing also reached the highest quality
In this room, works made of wrought iron - railings, gates and grilles - from the museum's collection are on display. Signs and figures, such as were common as signs for inns and taverns, are also on display.
