Buying and trading: Merchant Shops

Merchant stores have been a very popular children's toy since the late 18th century. The more individual parts and drawers they had, the higher was their play value. Besides the pleasure, the learning effect of playing with them was considerable. Domestic and economic aspects came together. On the one hand, playing taught the children what they needed in the household and for cooking; on the other hand, they also had to pay, collect money, keep records, and trade. In the role-playing conversations between salespeople and customers, conversational situations were tried out and social manners practiced. Stores were intended as toys for both girls and boys.
