Whalebone on pianos

Description

Some whales have a filtration system in their upper jaw with which to filter out plankton. Commonly known as whalebone, these horny plates are at once stiff and flexible, making them a much sought-after raw material. Among the instruments that contain whalebone are square pianos, where its elasticity was used to activate the dampers that stop the strings reverberating after they have been struck. These days brass wire is used as an alternative.
