Objekt 2137
Warm bread for cold winters
Description
In middle-class households it was common for food to be ordered every
day at bakeries and butchers and then delivered to homes. In summer these
deliveries were carried out with handcarts, small wagons or bicycles. In
the snowy winters that still prevailed in the 19th century, deliveries often
required sleds. This bread sledge belonged to the A. Schaupp bakery located
at Hardstrasse 66 in Basel. Slits allowed the oven-warm delivered bread to
cool down, while the takings or order lists could be kept in a small box.
