Next year in Jerusalem?

Description

The hope of Jews all over the world of a return to Palestine was particularly
topical in the 19th century. At a time when many modern states were
forming, anti-Semitism was also on the rise in Europe. In reaction to this
the Austrian-Hungarian journalist Theodor Herzl promoted the realisation
of a Jewish state in the region of ancient Israel, also called Zion. In 1897, he
convened the First Zionist Congress in Basel. As Herzl noted in his diary:
ʻIn Basel, I founded the Jewish state.ʼ
