Toilet table

At a toilet table like this one, the lady of the house probably once dedicated herself to her personal hygiene. Various utensils used for this purpose can be seen on the table. These include a "scratching hand", a plug-in comb made of gilded brass, various hairpins, a powder box made of ivory, a clothes brush with a wooden handle and a silver-plated smelling box in the shape of a heart. Independent bathrooms, as we know them today, became popular only in the last 150 years. Before that, water bowls and small toilet tables were available for personal hygiene in rooms that were not exclusively used for this purpose.
