The Coin as a Reflection of Statehood
Description
When issuing coins, the state had to visualize for its often illiterate population that it vouched for the coin’s value. Thus, minting authorities usually chose simple and generally understandable representations. In the case of monarchies the matter was simple: The coin image showed a portrait of the ruler or his coat of arms together with a set of insignia such as crown, sceptre, sword or crosier.
