Communities in Coin Images
Description
When a body politic such as a city, a monastery or a republic issued coins, it usually chose as a motif the picture of its principal tutelary deity or the patron saint of the city’s main church. Occasionally one also comes across symbols or «talking» images that stand for the respective names.
Although each polity usually had its own distinctive motif, states with comparable forms of government display an astonishing number of commonalities when it comes to coin images – through all the ages.
