A municipal theatre was erected along today’s Theaterstrasse between 1829 and 1831 according to the plans of Basel architect Melchior Berri. Shortly beforehand Berri had already designed the casino at Barfüsserplatz. At the back one can see the Elisabethenkirche which was finished in 1864.
