The view from above into Freie Strasse – here around 1870 – shows how narrow this street was in the 19th century. Towards the end of that century nearly all the houses on the right-hand side of the street were demolished in just a few years. The building line was then set back a few metres to make room for a commercial street that accommodated the needs of the growing town.
