The image depicts the old slaughterhouse above the Birsig stream. Here fifty large animals were slaughtered daily and sold on open benches in the mid-19th century. The establishment was closed down in 1871 on sanitary grounds and moved to the new slaughterhouse in the St. Johann district. The old slaughterhouse was demolished in 1887.
