Romanticised retrospection
Description
This is a model of the Barfüsserplatz and its surroundings around 1870, a time when the city was growing from a small town into a medium-sized industrial city. The number of inhabitants was rising rapidly and people lived in the old town in overcrowded flats in dreadful sanitary conditions. What seems so picturesque in this model was in actual fact a slum in the 19th century. The model was created over the course of twelve years by engineer and industrial school teacher Gustav Nauer-Rüegg and finished in 1926 using maps, sketches, engravings and photographs as references.
