Changing townscape
Description
1967 was not a particularly cold year. But as average temperatures in the
1960s lay around 1.5° C below today’s annual average, the city in winter
was often covered in snow. What cannot be seen here is the upheaval in
city planning that had taken place in Basel since the 1950s. The population
had grown to more than 200,000 inhabitants, which brought massive
new housing and even the first high-rise buildings. At that time, the
townscape was still marked by historical buildings. At present, the historical
skyline is being challenged by several new skyscrapers close to the
old city.
