Country estate on Elsässerstrasse
Description
The painting shows the country estate known as ‘Bellevue’, which stretched
from the Elsässerstrasse to the Rhine. In the background the Johanniter
Bridge, built from 1880 to 1882, can be seen, also the Münster, St. Martin s̓
Church and St. Elizabeth s̓ Church. The splendid garden pavilion was commissioned
by the estate s̓ former owner, Niklaus Reber and demolished
in 1902 during another city expansion. As early as 1870, the city had started
operating an abattoir in this part of the St. Johann neighbourhood.
On account of the rapid population growth, the slaughterhouse had to
be continually expanded in subsequent years and took up more and more
space.
