Provenance research: object autopsy

Description

An object autopsy is often the only way to find out the past of an instrument. Characteristics such as labels, inscriptions, repairs or processed areas are documented and evaluated by experts in order to find clues about previous owners.

The examination of the Gagliano violin focused on two central questions: is the violin "genuine" in all its parts and are there any other clues to its former owners?
