Portrait of Jeremias Schlegel (1730–1792)

Jeremias Schlegel was baptized on February 12, 1730. He came from the 2nd marriage of his father, the instrument maker Christian Schlegel (1667-1746) with the Basel burgher's daughter Anna Catharina Sixtin. After the death of his father on November 3, 1746, he had to take over the workshop despite his youthful age of 16. In 1752 he became a member of the Collegium musicum as a bassoon player (until 1772) and thus also "civis academicus". His workshop must have enjoyed a very good reputation, but his two sons apparently had no particular interest. Jeremias Schlegel was buried on February 6, 1792.
