The important portrait painter Joseph Esperlin (1707-1775) portrayed the children of the Basel silk ribbon manufacturer Hieronymus Wieland-Keller (1722-1794) and his wife Anna Maria (*1726) with psychological flair: 12-year-old Anna Margaretha (1749-1773), 7-year-old Maria Magdalena (1754-1803) and 13-year-old Johann Conrad Wieland (1748-1818) pose playing checkers. In keeping with French rococo fashion, the children are dressed like "young adults".
