Objekt 2144
Late breakthrough
Description
On 26 June 1966, a 60-percent majority of the male citizens of Basel declared
themselves in favour of voting rights for women, which made Basel-Stadt
the first German-speaking canton of Switzerland to achieve this step. Hence,
this ballot box from then on also contained women s̓ ballots. The breakthrough
came after four abortive votes in 1920, 1927, 1946 and 1954. Swisswide,
women s̓ suffrage in federal elections took till 1971: 65 years after
Finland, 53 years after Germany and Austria, and 19 years after Lebanon.
