Objekt 2143
Fear of bombs
Description
During the Second World War one of the greatest threats to the civilian
population came from the air. The Allies and the German armed forces
bombed cities, industrial plants and traffic routes throughout Europe. On
account of its geographical proximity to Germany and France, Basel saw
itself exposed to a certain danger of bombardment, which was met from
1940 onwards by a blackout decreed nationwide. Such lanterns made of blue
glass with a cover served as a source of light invisible from the air.
