Objekt 2142
Basel as safe haven
Description
During the Nazi rule hundreds of thousands of people fled Germany, including
numerous Jews. Basel and the neighbouring communities were obvious
places of refuge due to the border close by. The official Swiss policy on refugees
was restrictive. Up until the end of the war, the country took in around
295,000 persons according to official figures, of which 21,000 were Jewish civilians.
The number of people who entered Switzerland without registering
remains unknown, as does that of persons turned away at the border.
