Objekt 2141
State epidemic control
Description
In the 19th century, the hygienic conditions in the inner city were disastrous.
In the face of imminent typhus and cholera epidemics, the city began
to organise refuse collection and street cleaning. From 1891 onwards, the
removal of rubbish in the inner city was regulated by the authorities; by
the Second World War the radius of removal had extended to the entire city.
From 1933 onwards, household waste could only be disposed of in metal
buckets of the ‘Patent Ochsner’ type. These had already been in use in
Zurich several years before.
